Peruvian Inca Orchid dogs are a very ancient breed from Peru. Evidence to this fact are seen in pottery and drawings dated hundreds of years BC. In Peru and countries other than the USA they are called "Perro sin Pelo del Peru", meaning "Dog without Hair from Peru". Outside of the USA this breed is shown in conformation (a competition where knowledgeable judges evaluate dogs to verify their breeding quality based on a written standard defining the physical attributes that breed must possess) in FCI sanctioned dog shows, the world's largest dog show organization held in 80 countries. Peruvian Inca Orchid (PIO) is the name given to the breed in the USA for registering with AKC's Foundation Stock Service (FSS). With time, the AKC may grant the PIO full AKC rights to show in conformation. At this time PIO in the FSS can breed and be AKC registered plus show in performance events and receive titles i.e. obedience, agility, tracking etc. For a PIO to gain a conformation championship in the USA, they must compete in an organization that recognizes rare breeds. Those organizations are: UKC, ARBA, IABCA and Rarities.

Peruvian dogs are a sight hound that come in a hairless variety or coated like a traditional dog. Both varieties can be born in the same litter if one or both the parents are hairless. If two coated dogs are bred together, then only coated puppies are born. PIO usually range in size from 16-24" tall and weight 20-55 pounds respectively. The average is 18-22" and 30-40 pounds. PIO come in a variety of colors, coat patterns and coat lengths. Hairless are usually shades of grey-black or red-brown. Hairless can have a large amount of pink skin, or fully colored skin. Puppies whom are born mostly pink have color spots that grow with age. A young dog may be mostly pink skin, but as a mature adult may have little to no pink left due to the growth of color. Most the hairless have very little hair on their body, although there are occasional 'hairy' hairless dogs. The hair that a hairless does have is supposed to be very short, not long like a Chinese Crested. While a fully hairless body is preferred, hairless are allowed short hair on their head, feet and tail only. Coated dogs can have very short hair like a Greyhound up to hair similar to a medium length Borzoi's coat.

Peruvian Hairless dogs are quite rare. Their population is estimated to be near 1000+ dogs world wide. Some countries don't have a single Peruvian dog. |

This female on the right is very pregnant. She is a black tri, coated dog. |
Most the hairless dogs in this family of PIO had very good skin, no pimples and were healthy dogs. The ears of the hairless are supposed to stand straight up for showing. The coated dogs' ears must not rise to be correct. |
